Am I a Responsible Citizen of the Digital World?

0May 29, 2019Written by FARYALYOUSHA

As a human, I am living in a world where so many things are on one’s fingertips. I do not know who coined the term, ‘The world is on the fingertips’. However, I know that this saying has become true because of the digital devices entered in our lives with internet access. These devices accompanied with internet access enable us to connect ourselves to the people far and wide. Internet access helps us to do many tasks on digital devices like business, to be connected to our families and friends, learning, teaching, art, medicine, and other countless things. This connection to the people for different purposes also coined another term, ‘Digital Citizenship’. Whoever is using digital devices and the internet is a digital citizen whether one knows it or does not.

Around the world people have access to digital devices and internet and using it successfully. This is an interesting point that even the people who do not have any degree or higher education or are not technology savvy, they are also using digital devices and internet. The use of these digital devices and internet proves that how easy these thing are to use and how quickly they have become the part of countless people’s lives in the world.

When one joins any organization or becomes the member of any society or country, he/she enjoys the benefits or privileges of that organization or the country. Every society, organization, business, family, and country provides its member many opportunities which come along with some responsibilities

I am the one who is unknowingly the member of this digital world for the last 19 years and due to the course EDU520, I know now that with the advantages of the digital world I also carry responsibilities.

Being a citizen of digital world, one should know and follow the rules and responsibilities of this sphere. In fact these responsibilities are called etiquette. Zerkina, N., Lomakina, Y., Kisel, O., & Lazarou, E. (2019) said,” Netiquette (network etiquette) is the rules of behavior and norms of communication on the Internet, the culture and traditions of the online space, which most Internet users follow.”  Zerkina, N., Lomakina, Y., Kisel, O., & Lazarou, E. (2019) also simplified the rules and etiquette of this area of our lives, “Still the basic rules remain common to all Internet users: to show respect for someone else’s opinion, not to become too personal, not to be impolite and not to be rude to other users, not to offend anyone.”

Based on the rules explained by Zerkina, N., Lomakina, Y., Kisel, O., & Lazarou, E. (2019) here is my statement being a digital citizen:

“As a member of digital devices I, Syeda H. Naqvi, will respect other members’ of the digital world’s privacy and their rights. I will not post or use any other person’s work without one’s permission. I will try to contribute to the digital world in a positive way such as teaching, learning and helping the new digital citizens to be more responsible and positive citizens of this world. I will create, collaborate and cooperate with other digital citizens to build a better digital world for our next generations.”

Let’s Talk to the World

Let’s Talk to the World

Blog are online communication among people. “In their most elemental form, blogs provide a forum in which individuals express a unique voice on a given topic. Many times this occurs after doing research, considering the viewpoints of other people, and ferreting out relevant information (Jacqueline A. Gilbert, 2016).

Some applications of blogs are; posting of thoughts, expressions, learning, teachings, news, pictures, and reflections and the audience or the followers comment or give their feedback about the topic. As (Godas, 2014) quoted, “Blogs provide opportunities for people to publish their thoughts, opinions and feelings in an online environment (Deng & Yuen, 2011).” (P.2)

Blogs are platforms of reflective thinking. As (Rivers, 2013) said, “In learning, reflection is an action, something you do.” She also explained the components of reflection and how reflection becomes a plan of action through ‘Adapted From Gibbs’ (1988, P. 47); “Description (What happened?), Feelings (What were you thinking and feeling?), Evaluation (what was good and bad about the experience), Conclusion (What else could you have done?), Action Plan (If it arose again, what would you do?). (Godas, 2014) quoted, “Blogs can be used to enhance reflective thinking because blog posts are sequenced chronologically and allow users to see how their thinking has changed over time (Ellison & Wu, 2008).

As far as course520_30 is concerned, it is unique in many ways, such as what you have heard of technology and its uses, you did it as an assignment. The assignment to create ‘Personal Learning Environment’ like blog, pages, and website, sure enough, it is a hands-on training process. This part of the course is pretty challenging because creating a website, a blog, and pages are new things to do and one faces many difficulties in doing so. However, it encourages one to keep trying, no matter one does it the best or the worst.

The support from the instructor is available at all steps. Also, the material is very supportive in terms of understanding the topic. One content material WordPress is especially easy to follow for the beginners in creating a blog, website, and pages. At least any beginner who is scared of technology and does not know a lot about how to use technology can create a personal technological/digital identity through this tool (WordPress). Nonetheless, it requires time and practice to use this tool to its full potential.

Several online personalities are using technology to learn and teach to help others. One online figure is Connie Malamed, who built a unique positive digital identity. Professionally, as her website says, (Malamed, 2019) she offers “creative design and development services and inspired speaking and workshop engagements.” She uses many different social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Website where she posts her thoughts, expertise, opinions, and solutions to various problems related to her field. She can easily be found on YouTube also. She uses catchy titles for her videos or articles as (Patel, 2016) suggests, “Start by writing a catchy headline which is going to attract the attention of your audience.” One example of Connie Malamed’s catchy headline is her YouTube video, (Malamed, Learning is Social, 2015) ‘Learning is Social’.

She also has a big following on Twitter account,

The second personality is a classroom teacher Mrs. Colleen Signori, who is a 5th-grade teacher. She uses only one social media platform, Instagram, because she said, she was not a technology person and did not need to use many social media platforms. She has more than 1,600 followers on Instagram.

However, her presence is very positive, engaging, and supportive. By looking at her Instagram it can be said that she believes pictures are strong way of communication, as article (Is Social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) a positive thing for physical education/health teachers to engage in? Why or why not?, 2017) mentioned, “educators can post pictures to social media outlets that model how they are being active, and can encourage their students and their community members to do the same.” She has almost 1600 follower on Instagram.

Mrs. Signori acknowledges her students’ work in a unique way by posting it on Instagram. So, the families can also see the class room performance of their children.

Long hours of Schools

Long hours of schools

0May 10, 2019Written by FARYALYOUSHA

I think school hours are very long in the USA schools. Because of long hours students act out.

My opinion is based on the observation I see everyday in classrooms. The students are angry, not interested in education, not curious, and bored.

Most Parents send their students to school for reasons other than having them education. Some reasons include that parents need to go to work and school is a safe and free place to take care of their children and parents also want some free time for themselves. When I put myself in a situation where I am constantly asked, “no talking”, “pay attention”, “sit the right way”, etc. for almost seven hours how would I feel? I feel embarrassed, angry, and a prisoner.

How would one can learn with these feelings. My suggestion is schools should end maximum at 2:00 p.m.
